Around 700 people were forced to evacuate from a central London hotel after a fire was caused by self-heating towels in the spa area. The London Fire Brigade said four firefighters and about 25 firefighters were called to a fire at a hotel on Godliman Street on June 11. Around 700 people were evacuated from the building before the brigade arrived. Firefighters found a small fire that involved stacking towels in a hallway in the basement.
The brigade was called at 6.37pm and the fire was under control around 7.35pm. Firefighters from Dowgate, Shoreditch, Whitechapel and Soho were on hand. Fortunately, there were no reports of injuries. The London Fire Brigade believe the fire was accidental and caused by self-heating towels in the spa area.

A spokesman for the London Fire Brigade said: “These types of fires often involve textile-contaminated textiles, most commonly flaxseed, massage and cooking oil on carpets, tablecloths and cooking whites. Make sure you follow the recommendations of the manufacturers of your textiles. check before washing.
“Sometimes, when the materials are cleaned and put into the drum dryer, the heat of the drum drying can not escape. This can lead to a high enough temperature, which allows it to build up to a point where it melts and eventually inflamed.
“When washing and then drying on a hot cycle, always use the cooling cycle on the tumble dryer so that it cools down and allows the heat to dissipate properly before you stack laundry items together.”
