LONDON — After arriving with the sunrise in London hours earlier, a grinning Matt LaFleur took it upon himself to ask the first question in his pre-practice press conference on Friday.
“What time is it?” the Packers head coach joked as he stepped onto the podium. “I’m trying to figure it out right now.”
Yes, LaFleur was aware of local noon time, but his humor offered insight into the immediate aftermath of his team’s 7-hour night flight across the Atlantic Ocean.
It served as purpose, however, as the Packers began to acclimate to both mind and body ahead of the franchise’s first international regular-season game this Sunday against the New York Giants at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. .
The team slept as much as possible during the flight, with some players and coaches faring better than others. Once on the field, the Packers kept the players busy both in the meeting room and at a practice field adjoining the team hotel.
It’s old hat for tight end Marcedes Lewis, who played four games in London as a member of the Jacksonville Jaguars. In fact, one of his most memorable games came in London when he caught three touchdowns from Blake Bortles in a 44-7 elimination of the Baltimore Ravens in 2017.
It was around his third trip to London that Lewis felt he began to master his routine. Based on that experience, the 6-foot-6, 267-pound tight end liked the energy and enthusiasm he saw from the team during practice Friday.
Lewis also thinks LaFleur hit all the right notes while preparing the Packers for their regular season opener on the road, checking locker room temperatures with the veterans.
“He always does a great job. He’s super responsive not only to other coaches but also to the players and he’s able to listen to guys and open to improving,” Lewis of LaFleur said. “I think he’s done a great job getting us here and getting us ready, trying to make us stick to our schedule as much as possible.”
The Packers have changed their usual process on a few points, including the game planning process. LaFleur said the team laid out their entire plan for the Giants before leaving for London.
With that in mind, the Packers used Friday’s practice as a virtual tour. Although centered and focused, the practice had an energetic and playful vibe, all things considered.
All-Pro cornerback Jaire Alexander even stayed on afterwards to play with the kids attending the Play 60 event that took place, throwing a few balls their way. It’s all part of the fun.
“I’m excited about it. You don’t play in London too often,” Alexander said. “I’m just grateful to be here.”
Alexander joked that most of the team operated on “four or five cups of coffee”, but not him. “I’m natural,” the five-year-old cornerback joked. “I’m going to do some meditation. It will wake me up.
The Packers’ goal was to keep players awake as long as possible to help reset their biological clocks. While Lewis reckons most of the roster would arrive well before curfew, they still had some time and energy to enjoy London once the working day was over.
Lewis said he had friends in central London whom he planned to meet for dinner, while quarterback Aaron Rodgers and receiver Allen Lazard intended to watch the friendly game of the United States women’s national soccer team against England.
Then there’s sixth-year linebacker Eric Wilson, who is experiencing a bit of deja vu after flying to London last weekend as a member of the Nova Scotia Saints practice squad. Orleans.
Coincidentally, the Packers are staying at the same hotel and playing at the same venue as the Saints for their game against Minnesota seven days earlier.
Between the two games, Wilson also flew from New Orleans to Green Bay to sign with the Packers on Wednesday. Wilson said he laughed when he learned he was returning to the pond with his new team this week.
“It’s okay. I don’t mind,” Wilson said. “It’s fun to travel and go overseas and play in different places. Even when we travel to the United States, it’s fun. I try to make the most of it in business class. “
As exhausting as Friday felt for players and coaches, the Packers believe a relatively normal Saturday will help them reminisce about the main reason for the trip: a fourth straight win.
Ultimately, the Packers have work to do against a New York Giants team that ruled out seven players Friday, including receivers Kadarius Toney, Kenny Golladay and rookie second-round pick Wan’dale Robinson.
“I think the schedule will work for us to acclimatize as much as possible,” Lazard said. “Obviously today, Friday, it’s going to be a bit more difficult, getting off the plane, going straight to training and meetings and then sort of moving on today. Hopefully sleep tonight prepare us for a successful Sunday.”
