Rishi Sunak has enough backers to run, supporters say

Rishi Sunak has secured the 100 MP nominations needed to enter the race to become the next Conservative leader and prime minister, his campaign said.

The former chancellor is yet to announce whether he will launch a fresh bid for the top job after losing out to Liz Truss in the summer.

Boris Johnson returns to the UK as supporters rally behind the former prime minister’s potential return.

Penny Mordaunt is the only candidate who has officially launched a campaign.

Applicants have until 14:00 BST on Monday to find 100 sponsors. If any candidate reaches 158 nominations, the race will be reduced to two candidates, as there will not be enough MPs left to support a third candidate.

It will then go to an online vote by members of the Conservative Party, with the result announced on Friday.

But if Conservative MPs choose a candidate, we could have a new prime minister by Monday afternoon.

Polls suggest Mr Johnson – who was ousted by his own MPs three months ago – would be the favorite to win members’ votes.

He has so far had 44 declared supporters, according to the current tally kept by the BBC, although other sources suggest it could be higher.

Mt Johnson is due to land in the UK after a holiday in the Caribbean, when his supporters hope to launch a campaign to return to Downing Street.

A close ally, Sir James Duddridge, said he received a message from the former prime minister saying: “I’m back, Dudders. We’re going to do this. I’m all for it.”

His supporters say he is the only candidate with the support of the voting public after winning the 2019 general election. Mr Johnson is still facing a parliamentary inquiry into whether he lied to MPs about Partygate.

Mr Sunak has secured the support of a number of senior colleagues, including former Chancellor and Health Secretary Sajid Javid, Security Secretary Tom Tugendhat and former Health Secretary Matt Hancock.

“It is abundantly clear that Rishi Sunak has what it takes to rise to the challenges we face – he is the right person to lead our party and take the country forward,” Mr Javid said.

Another backer, Tobias Ellwood, said he was the 100th MP to back Mr Sunak, adding: “It is time for a centrist, stable, fiscally responsible government that offers credible domestic and international leadership.”

According to the BBC’s running total of MPs who have signed up with support, Mr Sunak currently has 97 backers.

House of Commons leader Penny Mordaunt, who came third in the last leadership election, has 21 supporters according to a BBC survey. More than half of the parliamentary parties have yet to declare how they will vote.

Launching her campaign on Twitter on Friday, Ms Mordaunt said she would “unite our country, deliver on our promises and win the next [general election]”.

Mordaunt-supporting Conservative MP Bob Seely said “I think we owe the country a collective responsibility to apologise” and said he believed Ms Mordaunt had the best chance of providing “unity and leadership” within the party.

Among those who have ruled themselves out of the race are Defense Secretary Ben Wallace – who said he was “leaning” to support Mr Johnson – and current chancellor Jeremy Hunt.
