LONDON – The names of the 72 people killed in a London high-rise fire were read at a memorial service on Tuesday to mark five years since the tragedy, the worst house fire on British soil since World War II.
Former Prime Minister Theresa May and London Mayor Sadiq Khan have joined forces with Grenfell Tower survivors and the dead in Westminster Abbey service to remember those who died in the June 14, 2017 Grenfell Tower fire.
The opening of the Multi-Faith Service, Rev. Westminster dean David Hoyle said the loss and fear “were still alive and well”. When religious leaders took the names of those killed, the congregation said together, “Forever in our hearts.”
Prince William and his wife, Kate, joined hundreds of people for a separate service later Tuesday in the shadow of the tower.
The inferno at Grenfell Tower, a public housing complex in Britain’s wealthiest boroughs of Kensington and Chelsea, has shocked the nation and raised many questions about lax security regulations and other mistakes by officials and businesses that have contributed to so many deaths.
The fire broke out in the middle of the night in a kitchen on the fourth floor of the tower and quickly spread to the outside of the 25-storey building as an illuminated fusion. Flammable cladding panels installed on the outer walls of the tower were sealed as the fire ran out of control.
Firefighters from across the country formed an honor guard as locals took a leisurely stroll from the base of the tower.
A public inquiry has led to a year-long investigation into the disaster, and a major police investigation is underway. No one has been charged, and police have said no charges will be filed until the public inquiry is complete.
This has frustrated many survivors and sad families. Rev. Graham Tomlin, Bishop of Kensington, said many families could not move on until they found justice.
“They can find no sense of acceptance or integration of what has happened in their lives,” he told Times Radio. “They can not rebuild their lives until there is a sense of justice because people think something went wrong in Grenfell in Grenfell, and yet no one was held responsible for it.”
Last month, the British government banned metal composite cladding panels for all new buildings.
Officials have also issued new security regulations requiring similarly dangerous disguises to be removed from tower blocks across the country. But it is an expensive job and the work has not been carried out on some apartment buildings because there is a dispute over who should pay for it.
