A man copes as the city tears down a homeless camp in London

City officials say compassion and concern are key to their response to homelessness, but health and safety should also be considered.

All of these issues came to the fore when crews began dismantling the camp at the west end of downtown London, Ont. on Tuesday.

It is a place that city officials have visited many times, but are now taking steps to remove it completely.

Anthony Featherston says he is currently a single resident of the camp, telling CTV News London: “The crew came in and told me I had too much stuff and they evicted me and said I had to move.”

A large contingent of an informed City of London coordinated response team was on hand at Evergreen Park around 10am Tuesday, but departed shortly after the arrival of CTV News London cameras.

According to Featherston, “One gentleman came and told everyone,” Pack your bags, let’s go, the news crew is here, “and then they gave me a few more days to pack the rest of my stuff.

The city released a statement highlighting their collaboration with London Cares to clear debris from the site.

Part of the statement reads: “There was also evidence of fire pits on site. In the past, workers removed a significant amount of rubbish and sharp objects from the site, ”adding that the site still has sharp objects, food waste and debris.

The statement continued: “As a result, and at the request of London Cares, a notice to remove their belongings and leave the site was posted last Thursday, today’s deadline.”

CTV News London spoke to several people living in the streets near Evergreen Park. No one wanted to be identified, but it was said that there had been a number of disturbing – sometimes disturbing – incidents. They believe many of them are related to the camps along the river.

A young mother pushing a stroller explains: “We are not entirely sure if they are people from there, but on Friday my husband’s van was broken into and all his tools were stolen.”

Another man, standing on his porch, related his meeting with a naked man three months ago.

“Knocking on your side door at seven in the morning burst into the house. My girlfriend just had time to get him out of there, beat him naked, ”she says. “It looks like they take the wire and the copper wire is burning – it burns the insulation out of it – and you can smell it on the street.”

Meanwhile, the young mother says she has compassion for people in difficult times.

“I believe in compassionate custody removal or I’m trying to figure out where they can go, but at the same time it’s not great that they are taking over such places,” she says.

As for Featherston, he admits he has struggled with addictions and has had conflicts with the law in the past, but says he is now working and knows help is available.

“I have a lot of support,” she says through her tears. “My pride stands in the way of asking my family for help.”
