London remains the most congested city in the world, the report finds

Five of the UK’s most congested roads are in London, a report has found

London’s roads remain the most congested in the world, with more time lost to traffic jams than before the pandemic, researchers have found.

Motorists in the capital will spend an average of 156 hours waiting on the roads in 2022, according to a report by traffic information provider Inrix.

It was the second year in a row that the city topped Inrix’s global congestion ranking.

The researchers also found five of the UK’s most congested roads were in London.

The report, covering 1,000 cities in 50 countries, found the time lost to traffic in the capital last year was 5% higher than pre-pandemic.

The most congested corridor was the southbound A219 from Fulham to Morden – the main exit from the capital – where drivers lost an average of 47 hours last year.

This was due to delays caused by the closure of Hammersmith Bridge to motor vehicles, investigators said.

The report found Bristol had the UK’s second worst road, followed by Manchester, Birmingham and Belfast.

Globally, Chicago in the US was found to be the world’s second most populous city last year, followed by Paris and Boston.

The author of the report, Bob Pishue said: “It is good to see public and commercial life returning to normal, but it is sad that we are seeing gatherings that are approaching, if not surpassing, pre-epidemic.

“We need to improve congestion while improving mobility and accessibility in cities to avoid damaging economic recovery and disrupting the lives of commuters and residents.”

Transport for London has been approached for comment.
