eavy rainfall brought chaos to London commuters on Thursday with localized flooding across the capital and the main hubs, Paddington and Charing Cross, forced to close in parts.
Five flood warnings were in place across the capital, while a yellow thunder warning was issued across the city and the southeast.
Paddington – one of London’s busiest stations – only exits on the Bakerloo line, according to TfL’s website.
Exits one and two are also closed at Charing Cross. Meanwhile “heavy flooding” means Dagenham Heathway Underground station is closed, and northbound trains do not stop at Tooting Bec.
Barking and Dagenham Borough Council said on Thursday morning there was “severe flooding across the county” and urged people to drive with caution.
Meanwhile, a lorry driver tragically died after his vehicle overturned in treacherous conditions in east London shortly after 6am.
The fatal crash occurred on the A13 eastbound near Wennington in the Borough of Havering, sparking a major emergency response. As of 9.30am, the road remains closed between Ferry Lane Interchange and Wennington Interchange.
It comes after the Met Office said there was a “good chance” of driving conditions being affected by the rain, while delays to train services were also a possibility.
The weather service said parts of the south-east could see 50mm of rain fall over six hours.
“Some flooding of some houses and businesses [is possible],” it says, “leading to some damage to buildings or structures”.
Meanwhile, the Environment Agency has put flood warnings in place for five waterways in London.
The warnings for: the area around Bvery Brook in Merton, Sutton, Kingston upon Thames, Richmond upon Thames and Wandsworth; the Hogsmill River area from Ewell to Kingston-upon-Thames; Ravensbourne area in the boroughs of Lewisham, Bromley, Greenwich and Croydon; the Wandle River area in Wandsworth, Merton, Lambeth, Croydon and Sutton; and his shuttle Cray.
A flood warning is also in place outside the Surrey capital, near the River Rythe from Oxshott to Thames Ditton.
The Met Office said: “Outbreaks of heavy rain and thunder are likely to develop and move across the east and south-east of England from the early hours of Thursday.
“Ten to 20mm of rain is likely over a fairly large area, but with some thunderstorms, some sites are likely to see 30 to 40 mm in two to three hours and maybe 5mm or more over six hours,” he said.
“Lightning will be an additional hazard. Areas of rain are expected to ease from the southwest before clearing into the North Sea during Thursday afternoon.
It is expected that the wet weather will clear in time for the bank holiday weekend, which the Met Office predicts will be “largely dry and sunny” for the south-east.
