Man arrested after fatal stabbing near Oxford Street in central London

A man has been stabbed to death on a side street in London’s Oxford Street. The Metropolitan Police said officers were called at around 11.40am on Monday to reports of a stabbing in Poland Street.

London Ambulance Service and the air ambulance attended, but the victim was pronounced dead at the scene 40 minutes later. The man has been arrested.

A statement from the Metropolitan police said: “At 11.40am on Monday 15 August police were called to reports of a stabbing in Poland Street, W1. Officers attended with the London Ambulance Service and the London Air Ambulance. The man was found with stab wounds.

“Despite the best efforts of the emergency services, he was pronounced dead at the scene at 12.20pm. His identity has not been confirmed. A man has been arrested in connection with the incident.

Poland Street is a turn off from Oxford Street, one of the busiest shopping areas in Europe, and attracts tens of thousands of visitors a day, and runs into Soho, another bustling area known for its nightlife. they are nocturnal.

A spokesman for London Ambulance Service said: “We were called at 11.36am today to reports of a stabbing in Poland Street, central London. We sent ambulance crews, a paramedic in a car first responder and incident response officer in the area.

“We have also dispatched the London Air Ambulance. Our first paramedic arrived in less than seven minutes. Despite the best efforts of our teams, the patient sadly died at the scene.”

So far this year there have been 57 murders in London, including Monday’s stabbing.

A spokesman for the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, said: “The Mayor’s thoughts are with the friends and family of the victim following this horrific attack in our city today.

“A man has been arrested and the mayor is speaking to the Met police about the incident. Every death from violence in London is a tragedy, which is why the mayor’s first priority will always be to fight crime as well as the complex causes of crime.”
