Police are looking for a man after a double stabbing in east London left one woman dead and another injured.
A woman in her 50s was found dead and a woman in her 30s was injured in a house in Newham, Metropolitan Police said.
Police said the stabbings were not a random attack and that the suspect was known to the two women.
For operational reasons, they did not disclose what the relationship was or if the two women were related or if they knew each other.
Police said they were called at 3.35am on Sunday to a house on Windmill Lane, near the Stratford mall in east London.
Paramedics treated the victims, although the 50-year-old woman could not be saved. The younger woman is now in the hospital and her injuries are not considered critical.
Ch Insp Lisa Parker said: “My thoughts and sympathies are with these two women as well as their friends and family.
“I know that people in Newham and in particular in the Stratford area will be shocked and concerned by this tragic incident. I share their concern and can assure you that expert detectives are working at a fast pace to identify and arrest whoever was responsible.
“Local officers will be patrolling the area and I urge anyone with information or concerns to speak with these officers. They are there to protect and support you.”
So far this year, homicides in the Met police area are down compared to the same point last year. A total of 86 homicide investigations were launched in 2022, compared to 109 between January and October 2021. Overall, in 2021, there were 131 homicides recorded in the Met area, which covers most of London.
The Met said: “Despite the efforts of emergency services, one of the women, aged 50, was pronounced dead at the scene. The woman’s family has been informed and is being supported by specialized officials.
“The second woman, in her 30s, was taken to hospital where her condition is not considered life threatening at this time.
“Urgent investigations are underway to track down a man believed to have been known to both women. We will not release any further details about this man.”
Police said an autopsy, to give a formal cause of death, and formal identification had not yet been made.
Those who may have information to help with the murder investigation can call Crimestoppers or 101, the non-emergency police number.
