The official is “no longer employed at the US Embassy in London” after declaring his support for England ahead of Friday’s World Cup clash with America.
Ahead of the goalless draw in Qatar, the embassy posted a video on their official Twitter account, joking that their spokesman Aaron Snipe had been fired before the game.
Above the tweet, the Embassy said it was “sad” to announce his departure, “but some things are more important than diplomacy.”
In the video, Snipe can be seen entering the office wearing an English scarf, where he receives disgusted looks from several colleagues.
As he walks up to his office, which is hung with English flags, someone has printed out the letters that say “traitor” and taped them to the glass, next to the stars and stripes.
Then a colleague comes and tells him that he “called HR” and they want to see him “now”.
The video then cuts to Snipe bouncing back.
“Look, man, I don’t know why I have to remind you, but you’re American. You work for the US Embassy. You can’t support England,” the unnamed man tells him. “You’ll need to take off those ornaments. Take off that shirt. And I don’t want to call you here again.”
Standing up, Snipe replies, “Okay. Good conversation.”
On his way out, he takes off his England home shirt, only to discover that he has an away shirt underneath.
Then a line appears that says, “Aaron Snipe is no longer employed at the US Embassy in London.”
Among those who responded was Dame Karen Pierce, British Ambassador to the US and former President of the United Nations Security Council.
“He can be our new @UKinUSA sports attaché,” she tweeted. Jane Hartley, the US ambassador to Great Britain, replied: “You can have it.”
Some might say the video was more entertaining than the game, which the USA dominated but ended in a tie.
A well organized US team pressed and frustrated England well and could have been disappointed in the end after creating the better chances of the game.
The United States of America are third in Group B with two points after two draws, behind England and Iran, who scored a stunning win against Wales earlier in the day.
The Americans wrap up group play on Tuesday against Iran, and a win over Team Melli would guarantee nothing worse than second place and the USA advancing.
