The warning follows recent predictions from Imperial College London, Sadiq Khan says
The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, issued a warning about air pollution across the city on Tuesday.
Khan said people should be “careful in the next few days” and avoid unnecessary car journeys.
The capital city has been experiencing moderate air pollution since Saturday with the cold weather persisting, still foggy causing a bad spread of vehicular emissions.
Messages will be shown on the Transport for London (TfL) network.
Schools and towns will be notified, the mayor’s office said.
Khan said he was doing “everything in my power to combat” the toxic atmosphere.
“Following the latest forecast from Imperial College London, I am issuing a ‘high’ air pollution warning,” he explained.
“We all need to be vigilant over the next few days. I am urging Londoners to take care by choosing to walk, cycle or take public transport where possible, avoid unnecessary car journeys, stop the engine idling and not burn garden waste, all of which contribute to more pollution.
“This is especially important in order to protect those who are at risk of high pollution.”
People are being asked to avoid unnecessary car journeys
Khan said the warning showed why it was “important” to adopt an ultra-low emission zone (ULEZ) across London to “reduce toxic air pollution in our city”.
Last week he was accused of providing “false and misleading” information about the expanded facility, which will come into force in August. The mayor denied any wrongdoing.
