Snow begins to fall in these parts of London as temperatures plummet – live updates

Snow has been reported in parts of London as temperatures have actually plummeted. This morning (Friday, 9 December), there have been reports of snowfall in South London and North East London so far.

Sky News reporter Niall Paterson tweeted: “Snow in South London!” Meanwhile at around 8am, Leytonstone resident Charlotte Garratt said: “It’s snowing a bit in Leytonstone now!”

Forecasters predict it will snow in London next week – but it appears to be falling early. BBC weather experts have forecast the first signs for Wednesday (14 December), when hail is expected in parts of the capital, such as Richmond-upon-Thames in the afternoon.

Later on Thursday (15 December), Kenley in South London is forecast to see heavy snowfall in the early hours, so Londoners in parts of Croydon may wake up to a sprinkling of snow that morning. Moving on to Friday (December 16), light snow is forecast for most of West London with light snow forecast throughout the night into Saturday morning in places such as Uxbridge, Harrow, Hounslow, Wembley, Edgware and Stanmore.

Chingford in East London also has an evening snow forecast, with heavy snow around 10am on Saturday morning (17 December). The forecast for London is generally for hail Saturday morning, so there may be other parts of the city that will also see snow.

Clear the snow and ice early in the day

Move the snow while it is loose before it is packed together. If you remove the top layer, the sun will do the rest and a handful of salt will stop it from re-freezing overnight.

Clear and prevent slips

Take care where you move the snow

Don’t shovel snow into your neighbor’s driveway or gutter, even if it’s a pain.

Make a path in the middle for walking then shovel snow from the sides.

Offer to clear your neighbour’s paths

If your neighbors are sick or elderly (and you can handle it), you may want to help them out.

If things look really bad and they can’t get out at all, call the board.

Every single word of the Christmas classic ‘Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!’

Oh, it’s such a bad weather outside But the fire is so lovely And since we have nowhere to go Let it snow! Let it snow! Let it snow!

Man it’s showing no sign of stopping And I brought me some corn to pop The lights are off deep down Let it snow! Let it snow!

When we finally kiss goodnight How I hate to go out in a storm But if you really hold me tight All the way home I’ll feel warm

And the fire slowly diesAnd, my dear, we are still goodbyeBut as long as you love meLet it snow! Let it snow and snow!

Does London have snow fall?

Cities can go to extremes sometimes. Snowfall is rare in winter, falling an average of 16 days per year, though rarely heavy.

.

How can you predict a blizzard is coming?

Although blizzards are tracked by satellite, weather forecasters use computer models to predict their path. Models reside on giant supercomputers and are kept informed about the current state of the atmosphere.

. Blizzard WARNING: Sustained winds or frequent gusts of 35 miles per hour or more, plus heavy snow or gusts reducing visibility to less than a quarter mile, are expected for three hours or more.

How is snow detected?

Dual polarization radar can clearly identify rain, sleet, snow or ice pellets within clouds. NSSL scientists are developing an algorithm that will produce an estimate of whether precipitation is falling in liquid or frozen form, or if it reaches the ground.
