A family from south London stuck in Portugal has revealed how their outbound and outbound flights have been canceled amid recent travel chaos. Mickey Sewell, 31, her husband, mom and three children may now be forced to find extra accommodation by Sunday if they can’t get seats on an earlier flight home.
The nightmare of the journey began on the way to London airport when they received a message from Wizz Air stating that their outbound flight had been canceled. Unable to get any other seats on the same day, the next morning they set aside extra money for easyJet tickets as they did not miss their first family vacation since the pandemic.
But they were on their way to Faro Airport on Wednesday when they once again received a text message confirming that their flight home was also grounded. The family is now waiting in a friend’s apartment to find out how long they will be stranded, but some airport staff say there are no flights until the weekend.

Mickey, whose children are six, four and one years old, told the Mirror: “It’s very, very stressful. We were all packed up and ready to leave this morning at 7 o’clock. It’s very stressful with the kids and my daughter is autistic. If can’t bring us back before the weekend, we’ll have to find another hotel.
“The other family travels three hours to Lisbon and then changes flights to Porto and flies to Gatwick even though their car is at Heathrow. But that trip would be too stressful for my daughter.”
Miki, from Eltham, south-east London, added: “Obviously we weren’t absent from Covid. My kids can’t remember that we went on holiday, so we really made a big deal out of this trip and it was a real nightmare. We want to to leave this summer, but if it’s going to be like this, we might just not do it. “
Parents had to contact the school and say their children Tiggy (6) and Woody (4) will be absent from class. Wizz Air apologized for the disruption, citing widespread staff shortages affecting the industry, including air traffic control, ground operations and baggage handling, security and airport-wide.
A spokesman for the Mirror said: “While any cancellations are regrettable, the vast majority of our flights are on schedule, with more than 100,000 passengers arriving at their destinations each day. We would like to once again extend our sincere apologies to those clients whose travel plans are affected because we understand how disappointed they are, especially when so many people want and deserve to travel the world again. “
The airline said it was working to help customers affected by offering alternative flights, a full refund or 120 per cent of the airline’s loans. Compensation is available in a “reasonable amount” for food, travel and accommodation due to delayed or canceled flights, it added.
